![]() Unfortunately, of the two chargers offered one was occupied and the other was broken. ![]() I instead used the Google Maps and Zap Map apps of my iPhone to find a Polar charger at a Co-Op gas station, but only after the charger I originally aimed for was fully occupied by the time I got there, with nowhere to park and wait. The Fiat’s own navigation system isn’t helpful here, as while it lists nearby chargers it doesn’t show what speed these chargers are, or if they are available or occupied at that moment. I plugged in, tapped my bank card, headed for breakfast and returned to a battery 90 percent full.Ī couple of hours later and it was time to top-up the battery again. London cleared without issue, I headed north to Warwick Services, a new service station equipped with 12 ultra-fast chargers, plus 12 Tesla Superchargers. The entry-level 500e has a small 24kWh battery, 95 horsepower (compared to 118hp with the larger battery) and a real-world range of about 100 miles. In short, in Icon spec it’s a very well-equipped car – but then so it should be, as the car I drove carries a price of £30,132 ($41,300 inc tax). This particular model was equipped with the larger 42kWh battery, a motor producing 118 horsepower, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus wireless charging, and a whole host of driver assistance features. ![]() Navigating the city early on a Saturday morning was a breeze, with the Fiat feeling quite at home on the narrow streets. Larger than its predecessor, the 500e retains the same good looks Fiat This is the sort of journey that an EV with a claimed range of almost 200 miles should be capable of without causing a headache, and while a charge or two each way would probably be needed, I left London full of confidence. This isn’t a souped-up Abarth 500, so comfort and compliance is the name of the game.īeing equipped with the larger battery, I thought I would put the 500e’s claimed 199 miles of range and 85kW fast charging to the test, with a 265-mile journey from London to the Lake District in the north of England. And you know what? That’s absolutely fine. It’s a soft ride one that smooths out bumps but doesn’t offer much in the way of sportiness. It’s a car that feels as composed in town as it does on the highway, with road and wind noise nicely under control at low and medium speeds, and a comfortable ride that doesn’t become tiring, even on longer journeys. For its first electric generation, the 500 is a whole lot more mature than its previous incarnation. The rest of the driving experience is great. That said, it’s probably something buyers will get used to over time. For the 500e it feels like Fiat has ever-so-slightly missed the target. These are very small issues to point out, and I don’t want to labor the point, but with electric cars all feeling broadly the same, manufacturers need to get the basics just right. The updates interior features an optional 10.25-inch touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay.
